Stage West Calgary - There Goes The Bride Review
Updated: Sep 27, 2019
There Goes The Bride (Rated R)
A British farce by Ray Cooney & John Chapman
What's a stressed out father of the bride to do with Australian in-laws (to be) in the wrong hotel, a father-in-law who doesn't have any socks, an important ad campaign weighing on his mind, and a daughter ready to walk down the aisle? He gets knocked in the head and starts hallucinating a flapper girl who's madly in love with him (to the chagrin of his wife). And so the stage is set for this hilarious farce now playing at Stage West.
Just about anything that can go wrong will, a couple of times over, as the family of the bride struggle to keep their hats on long enough to make sure the wedding will go off without a hitch. You'll laugh. You'll laugh a lot, actually. And when you've taken a breath, get ready to laugh again. The characters are perfect, with a delightful amount of physical comedy to accompany the hilariously ridiculous story. This is British humour, through and through, every last second of it.
There's no intermission, yet you'll feel like no time has passed, by the time the curtain call arrives. Stand out performances by David Talbot as Dr. Gerald Drimmond, and Mark Weatherley as Timothy Westerby, the hallucinating father of the bride.
Synopsis: Timothy Westerby is overworked, underpaid, stressed-out, and his daughter is getting married in what he thinks is an overly-lavish and expensive ceremony. Timothy is ripe for a nervous breakdown – and on the morning of the wedding, he has one! It takes the form of ‘Polly’, the most gorgeous, voluptuous girl who apparently just wants to give herself to Timothy. Pity that she is but an apparition. The fact that Polly is an apparition is of course not apparent to Timothy who is convinced that Polly is totally real and is delighted to have this sexy guest at the wedding. Timothy’s wife, his mother-in-law, his daughter and the groom’s parents take a slightly different view of this “uninvited guest”!
Don't miss another hilarious offering by Stage West. There Goes the Bride plays until November 10.
