I begged Karen to be the one to see Legally Blonde: The Musical at Stage West Calgary and review it. Some of you may know, but last summer, I stage managed a youth production of the same show. This is the first time I've seen a show professionally done after I've worked on it. I was looking forward to see the show without the thoughts of "was the prop put in place?", "will I get the music queued up quickly enough?" intruding on the viewing.

If you've seen Legally Blonde with Reece Witherspoon, you know the plot of Legally Blonde: The Musical. Aside from the singing/dancing, it's pretty much the same show. Many may call it fluff, and I probably wouldn't disagree. It's a feel-good movie, and it's a feel-good musical. What the movie doesn't bring (to no fault of its own), and what Stage West's performance brings in spades is gigawatts of energy. Whether it's Elle getting ready to go to Harvard, or Brooke Wyndham Whipping us Into Shape, it's impossible not to feel the energy pouring from the stage. The choreography was brilliantly designed and executed.

The set was simple, functional, and allowed for us to shift gears without falling out of the story. When I was involved in Legally Blonde, our production used the tracks. I noticed one major difference between the live music and production tracks: with live music, you don't have to rush over moments to hit your next musical cue. And despite Legally Blonde being a "fluffy" piece, it did have some lovely moments. Elle realizing her worth, Paulette reclaiming her dog, and her life to name a few.

Whether, you're a blonde, brunette, with a perm, or without, Legally Blonde: The Musical will help remind you not to judge a book by its cover, and tenacity and drive will get you far, even if people don't think you're capable of it.

Stage West Synopsis: A fabulously fun international award-winning musical, Legally Blonde: The Musical, follows the transformation of Elle Woods as she tackles stereotypes, snobbery and scandal in pursuit of her dreams. This action-packed musical explodes on the stage with memorable songs and dynamic dances. Equal parts hilarious and heart-warming, this musical is so much fun it should be illegal!

Elle Woods appears to have it all. Her life is turned upside down, however, when her boyfriend dumps her so he can start getting serious about his life and attend Harvard Law. Determined to get him back, Elle uses her charm to get into Harvard too. At school, she struggles with peers, professors and Warner Huntington. With the help of Paulette and Emmett, though, Elle quickly realizes her potential and sets out to prove herself to the world.

Based on the adored movie, Legally Blonde: The Musical will take you from the sorority house to the halls of justice with Broadway’s brightest new heroine and, of course, her Chihuahua, Bruiser.

Show runs until June 24th. Tickets available at Stage West Calgary
