Stage West Calgary - PURE 90's
PURE 90's: By Timothy French and Howard Pechet
Music Arranger/Musical Director: Konrad Pluta
PURE 90's runs until February 4th.
PURE 90's is one show you do not want to miss. I love music from all eras and being an early 60's baby you'd think I'd prefer the older music but this show is my favourite Stage West musical revue so far. I highly recommend it...there's not enough gold stars to give it credit. PURE 90's is vibrant, colourful, lively and entertaining. The cast, costumes, set, band everything about the whole night was just brilliant. I took my family to see the show and they raved about it so much, saying they'd like to see it again...that's how good it is.
This show will take you on an amazing nostalgic musical journey through the 90's with tidbits of information from host of the night Andrew Macgillivray (Drew). Drew shows off his comedic qualities as host with colourful costumes, jokes and antics. Actually his characters are not unlike those of This Hour Has 22 Minutes. If you are a Stage West fan you will remember Drew from Hollywood Hits and 80's Solid Gold and One Hit Wonders.
This show is like attending the best New Years Eve party ever, in fast forward mode, celebrating 10 years of music with a little trivia thrown in for good measure. It's the final countdown, where the world was going to go boom into Y2K! You know how that played out right?
From country to pop, rap to rock there is music to suit all tastes. From latin shaker Ricky Martin, Shake Your Bon-Bon to Spice Up Your Life with some girl power from Spice Girls and let's not forget the Boy Bands Backstreet Boys, N'Sync and NKOB.
There are some powerhouse singers in this show that would make the original artists proud, especially Antonette Rudder...where did she get those pipes? Amazing! Not to shadow any of the others as I was amazed by all of the cast, their voices and energy. Talking of energy and bon-bon... I could not take my eyes off Jeremy Carver-James. No I'm not a dirty old lady! He could shake his bon bon better than anyone I know. Seriously, this guy has great dance moves and stamina. I was itching to get up and dance with him, well actually I was itching to dance to most of the songs especially to Livin' La Vida Loca. I was mesmerized the whole night.
Last but not least...the band as usual is great but look out for the solo guitar piece with the Garth Brooks number. A.M.A.Z.I.N.G!
Learn from Yesterday; Live for Today; Hope for Tomorrow ~ Albert Einstein
That sums up the end of another year nicely. Happy New Year and hats off to Stage West for another fabulous production.
Show runs until February 4th.

StageWest Synopsis: The ‘90s were Titanic and Jurassic Park at the box office, the advent of the World Wide Web, delinquent yellow cartoon characters on primetime TV, “the Rachel” haircut, and the last time the Stanley Cup lived in Canada. Oh, and… the Macarena. PURE ‘90s features the elite hit-makers of a decade that still feels like yesterday. “Girl Power” dominated the decade with unique vocalists like Celine Dion, Alanis Morrissette, Mariah Carey and Whitney Houston, alongside energetic performers like Madonna, Janet Jackson, and the Spice Girls. Riding high on rock careers built in the previous decade were artists like Aerosmith, U2, and Elton John, including Canadians like Bryan Adams, and later, the Barenaked Ladies. While newcomers to the pop scene, like the Backstreet Boys and *NSYNC, were engaged in a battle of the boy bands. Grab your butterfly hair clips and frost your tips because the ‘90s are back!
