Rock of Ages: By Chris D’Arienzo

Synopsis: It’s the tail end of the big, bad 1980s in Hollywood and the party has been raging hard. Aqua Net hair spray, Lycra, lace, and liquor flow freely at one of the Sunset Strip’s last legendary venues,a place where sex machine Stacee Jaxx takes the stage and scantily clad groupies line up to turn their fantasies into reality.Amidst the madness, Drew (an aspiring rock star and resident toilet cleaner) longs to take the stage as the next big thing. Drew also longs for small-town girl Sherri, who is fresh off the bus fromKansas with stars in her eyes. But the rock and roll fairy tale is about to end when German developers sweep into town with plans to turn the fabled Sunset Strip into just another capitalist strip mall. Can Drew, Sherri and the gang save the strip, and themselves, before it’s too late?
ROCK OF AGES takes you back to the hard rock era of big bands with big egos playing big guitar solos and sporting even bigger hair! This Tony Award-nominated Broadway musical features the hits of bands including Night Ranger, REO Speedwagon, Pat Benatar, Twisted Sister, Styx, Journey, Bon Jovi, Whitesnake and more.
Rock of Ages at Stage West was like the Mothership calling me home. While some may lambast my claim of being an "80s child", in my heart I dig the hair, the clothes, the makeup, and of course the music. Rock of Ages delivers all that and more! A show that doesn't take itself too seriously, yet is seriously awesome will make you rock right alongside the cast as Regina fights against the man, Sherrie and Drew find love, and Lonny and Dennis keep on rocking the free world. The guitar licks are on fire, the rock anthems are righteous, and the energy is unbeatable. The fun that every performer has on this stage translates across the entire house and gets everyone in on it. I love performances like that, where the actors just give in to the energy.
Technically, this show was top notch, with the light design making you feel like you were at a Def Leppard, or Poison, or Whitesnake concert. It was hard not to rush to the front of the stage and dance with the music that (in my opinion) will always stand the test of time . . . across the ages.
Show runs until June 25th. For tickets or more information on upcoming shows go to www.stagewestcalgary.com
