Stage West Calgary - Young Frankenstein
The New Mel Brooks Musical: Young Frankenstein
Book by Mel Brooks and Thomas Meehan
Music and Lyrics by Mel Brooks
Show runs up until June 26th
Synopsis: It’s alive! The electrifying adaptation of Mel Brooks’ monstrously funny film will leave you in stitches.
From the creators of the record-breaking Broadway sensation The Producers, comes this monster new musical comedy. The comedy genius Mel Brooks adapts his legendarily funny film into a brilliant stage creation!
Grandson of the infamous Victor Frankenstein, Frederick Frankenstein (pronounced “Fronk-en-steen”) inherits his family’s estate in Transylvania. With the help of a hunchbacked sidekick, Igor (pronounced “Eye-gore”), and a leggy lab assistant, Inga (pronounced normally), Frederick finds himself in the mad scientist shoes of his ancestors. “It’s alive!” he exclaims as he brings to life a creature to rival his grandfather’s.
I have to be honest, I wasn’t really looking forward to this show as I’m not really into Frankenstein movies but I was more than pleasantly surprised at this production. It was FABULOUS!
Right from the beginning it has you laughing with tongue in cheek adult humour. The opening was vibrant, loud and it was like that all the way through…very dramatic and entertaining!
The cast had this one in the bag as far as comedy goes...so funny. Hard to point out anyone as they were all great. But I was partial to the wee guy with the hump that kept moving and his "yes master" responses.
My favourite act was Roll in the Hay. This will have you in stitches with it’s sexual undertone. Very well done.
Other acts that stood out for me was Join the Family Business, the dancers were amazing in this and (There Is Nothing Like) The Brain.
It's a big cast, including lively talented dancers who show good tap in Putting on the Ritz… another of my favourite acts from the show with the monster, who surprisingly managed to dance in platform shoes!
I’m not sure if Stage West has changed anything but the band were utterly amazing as was the sound, effects, scenery and costumes. The best I’ve ever seen at Stage West.
So hats off to the band, design and production staff for making this show worthy of the Theatre Calgary stage. I really envisioned it on a bigger stage but the intimate environment and buffet dinner at Stage West is always an attraction.
This was a show and a half. I encourage you to go see it. Don’t be put off like I was with the title as the singing, dancing, acting and comedy is excellent. This is one show I’d recommend as a 6 out of 5. Now that’s a show you want to go see! Freaking Funny!
